How to Scan a UPI QR Code with Any Payment App
A walkthrough of scanning UPI QR codes across major payment apps, native phone cameras, and images saved in your photo gallery.
Golden UPI Rule:You NEVER need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. Entering your UPI PIN always and exclusively authorizes money to leave your bank account.
1. Scanning with Google Pay
- Launch the Google Pay application on your smartphone.
- Tap the "Scan any QR code" icon situated near the top-center of the home screen.
- Align your camera viewfinder with the QR code until the blue brackets focus.
- If scanning a screenshot or saved image, tap the small Gallery icon at the top right of the camera view and select your file.
- Confirm the recipient's name and amount on the payment confirmation screen before entering your UPI PIN.
2. Scanning with PhonePe
- Open the PhonePe app.
- Tap the QR Scanner icon located in the top-right header next to notification bells.
- Point your camera at the QR code. PhonePe automatically recognizes standard UPI QRs instantly.
- To scan an image received on WhatsApp or saved in gallery, tap "Upload from Gallery" at the bottom of the scanner.
- Verify the payee name, select your linked bank account, and enter your UPI PIN.
3. Scanning with Paytm or BHIM
- Open Paytm or BHIM UPI.
- Tap the prominent "Scan & Pay" button.
- Hold your camera over the code. Most scanners have a torch icon if scanning in low-light environments.
- Confirm payee name matches your expectation, input the amount (if it was a static QR), and authorize.
4. Using Native Phone Camera (iOS & Android)
Modern smartphones feature built-in QR recognition right in their default camera software:
- iPhone (iOS): Open the Camera app and aim it at the UPI QR code. A yellow banner with the UPI app name or "Open in [App]" will appear at the bottom. Tap it to directly launch your banking app.
- Android (Google Lens / Camera): Open the camera or Google Lens widget. Tap the small shutter or scan icon over the QR code to reveal the payment link.
Inspect Before Scanning
If someone sent you a QR image online and you want to verify what exact UPI ID, payee name, and parameters are embedded inside before opening your bank app, use our free UPI QR Decoder tool. It inspects the image entirely in your browser without contacting payment gateways.
UPI QR Scanning Questions & Answers
Do I ever need to enter my UPI PIN to receive money when scanning a QR code?
Never! This is the most crucial security rule of UPI: entering your UPI PIN always debits funds from your bank account. Receiving money via UPI or QR code never requires your PIN, password, or OTP. If someone asks you to enter your PIN to 'receive' or 'claim' cash, it is a scam.
How do I scan a UPI QR code saved in my phone's photo gallery?
Open PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm and tap the 'Scan QR' camera icon. Look for the small gallery/image icon in the corner of the scanner viewfinder. Tap it, select the saved QR code image from your gallery, and the app will decode the payment details automatically. You can also upload it to our UPI QR Decoder.
Can I scan a Google Pay or PhonePe QR code using any other UPI app?
Yes. All UPI QR codes in India conform to the interoperable standard established by NPCI. You can freely scan a PhonePe QR code using Google Pay, a Google Pay QR using Paytm, or a Paytm QR using BHIM or your mobile banking app.
What should I do if my phone camera cannot scan the QR code?
Check for smudges on your camera lens, increase ambient lighting or toggle the scanner flashlight, and ensure the entire square of the QR code is positioned within the viewfinder markers without excessive angle or glare.
Why is the payee name shown in my app slightly different from the shop board?
The payment app displays the official registered legal name or trade name linked to the merchant's bank account or GSTIN registration, rather than informal shop marketing signs. Always verify this name with the shopkeeper before confirming your transfer.
What is the maximum amount I can pay by scanning a UPI QR code?
The default NPCI limit for standard peer-to-peer and merchant payments is ₹1,00,000 per transaction or per day. Higher limits (up to ₹5,00,000) are permitted for specific verified categories like hospitals, educational institutions, and tax authorities.
